Katerina
"KATERINA 2010" is a limited edition porcelain ball jointed doll painted with china paint and strung together with stainless steel springs, pins and elastic cord. The joints are lined with thin leather for smooth movements. She stands 35.5 cm tall (14 in.) The china paint is permanently bonded together with the porcelain and will never fade. She has a removable wig made from fine Mohair. Her clothing and accessories were handmade by me. The blouse was hand embroidered with an old Ukrainian cross-stitch design. "KATERINA" is part of my private collection and is not available for sale. But a similar doll can be custom made from the same face mold.

"KATERINA" is a very special doll to me because I created her based on the character of a famous Ukranian poet and artist, Taras Shevchenko. Shevchenko painted the character Katerina and wrote a poem about her in 1838. I made Katerina hoping to bring this character to life. She represents a Ukranian social era of tragedy, destiny and love. Whenever I read this story it evokes such deep feelings that I want to cry. Katerina was an ordinary Ukrainian girl who fell in love with a Russian officer. She gave her love and self totally to this man ignoring what consequences this relationship might bring forth. This man played with her love and left her with the intentions of never returning to her. I have enclosed a segment of this poem here and provided a link to an English version of this poem.

“Katerina, heart of mine!

Fate is cruel, unkind!

Where on earth can you go now

With your orphan child?

Who will ask, or warmly greet

You without a husband?

Father, mother –strangers are,

        Difficult and stubborn!

Katerina was sent away by her socially strict parents. This brought her despair and eventually committed suicide. Her son was left alone as an orphan. In this poem Shevchenko gives warning to the naive maidens.
